- A pigs’ digestive track consists of an esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. A crayfish has a for- gut, which is an enlarged stomach that is specialized for grinding; the mid-gut, and the hindgut, which leads to the anus. A starfish has a mouth, two stomachs (cardiac stomach and pyloric stomach), which is connected to the anus and to the pyloric ducts and pyloric cecum, which extend out into each arm. All three organisms have a mouth, stomach, and an anus. The pig has more intestines than the other two, which results in more nutrients being absorbed into the body. The starfish has a stomach that can come outside of the body and get its food while the other organisms can’t. The pig and crayfish have teeth used to start the digestive process. The esophagus gets the food to the stomach (physical). The stomach breaks down the food from the stomach acid (chemical) and goes into the small intestine. It further breaks down and begins to absorb the nutrients into the body (chemical). The large intestine finishes breaking it down and sends the waste to the anus and out of the body (physical).
- All three of the organisms have a stomach. The pig and crayfish have the teeth to start breaking down the food and then goes down the esophagus to the stomach. Pigs will eat anything they can get to. They eat meat for protein, plants and fruits along with anything they can get their mouths to. Crayfish eat smaller fish and aquatic plants. Pigs and crayfish seem to eat about the same things, which could be from their similar digestive parts.
- The large and small intestines are all curled up inside the body. Because of the curled shape, there is more surface area compared if it was in a straight line in the same amount of space. The larger surface area means that is more area for reactions to occur.
- One of the parts inside a cell that has the same design is the mitochondria. With its rippled outside, there is a larger surface area for ATP reactions to happen. Two other parts are the Golgi body and the ER. If any of these parts didn’t have the ripple outside for more surface area, then we wouldn’t be able to live the way we do.
